Earth Day 2010

#1 Thing to Look Forward to this Summer

ESPN Sportsnation

One of the best features ESPN.com has besides, Bill Simmons and Streak for the Cash, is ESPN Sportsnation

Everyday a dozen or so polls are taken on some relevant sports questions. The picture above is from a poll last night.

I love ESPN Sportsnation because it gives such great perspective. Not only are there 20,000+ people voting in these polls, but the poll is broken down to how people in all 50 states (plus Washington D.C.) voted.

Taking a research class right now, I realize that these polls are drawn with a sampling frame bias. But, ESPN brings the greatest sports fans in the United States together. And, somehow the U.S. map results never surprise me. Take some time to look at the results from last nights poll.

The Good

Emma Watson, Interview Magazine.
"But CancĂșn was certainly not my favorite. We went to Ixtapa, where the ruins are. It was a beautiful, chilled-out part of the country. We went to Mexico City, which was amazing, but quite dangerous. We were happy to get out of there in the end. And we went to Cuba—I would tell everyone to go to Cuba now, because in 10 years it will be completely different."

The Bad
Jerry Sloan, bad-ass Hall-of-fame coach for the Utah Jazz went out with a fight. Sloan got ejected with a little over a minute left of the series ending match-up against the L.A. Lakers. Throwing down a few profanities at referee Steve Javies. Wish I had video to show.

Foreseeable Future

It has been 14 years since the highly hyped Joe Smith was drafted 1st overall, four picks ahead of future NBA Champion, MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, four time All-NBA first team and 12 time NBA All-Star Kevin Garnett.

While Joe Smith is still doing big things in the league, his career does not match up to KG's. It makes you wonder, how many professional sports drafts have there been worst results? Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan? Darko Milicic over Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh? Ryan Leaf taken by the San Diego Chargers with 2nd pick of the 1998 NFL Draft with Randy Moss slipping to the Minnesota Vikings with the 18th pick???????

The point is, talent and potential is in the eye-of-the-beholder. ESPN analysts like Mel Kiper Jr. may have more experience and information coming his way than the average fan, but year after year it shows that success for professional athletes is not predictable in the short and long term.

So, after all is said and done with this weekends NFL Draft your team may end up with the hottest college and NFL scout hyped player, but never jump to any conclusion because you may have picked up the next Tim Couch. But, then again you could have drafted the next Tom Brady. Time and experience will only tell.

If you're not feeling me on this read ESPN's Gene Wojciechowski's latest column. He looks through five-time Cy Young winner, 296 win and 10-time MLB All-Star Randy Johnson's scout report from 24 years ago. The scouting report by one MLB scout of the future Hall-of-Famer, "NO PROSPECT."

Who really knows?

Sofia Coppola's Next Project

Film auteur writer/director Sofia Coppola...

"...will set her next film at the iconic Chateau Marmont in Hollywood.

Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning will star in the Focus Features dramedy "Somewhere," which Coppola penned.

Story centers on a bad-boy actor stumbling through a life of excess at the Chateau Marmont. With an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter, he is forced to reexamine his life.

The filmmaker, who said she has been looking to make "an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles," received permission to shoot at the hotel, which has become notorious in recent years as a popular address for tabloid-friendly celebs. Film will lense in L.A. and Italy in June and July."

Doesn't sound all that interesting, but Coppola has made some good movies.

We're talking about playoffs?

The NBA regular season ends tonight with the playoff match-ups still in the air. Two nationally televised match-ups of Rockets @ Mavericks 8 p.m. and Nuggets @ TrailBlazers 10:30 p.m. EST will solidify the #2-5 spots in the Western Conference playoffs.

Where will amazing happen this year?

As B. Simmons puts it, "The West playoffs promise to be wackier than Lindsay Lohan. We're probably getting Orlando-Boston and Wade-LeBron in Round 2, Cavs-Celts in the Eastern Conference finals and either LeBron-Kobe or Celts-Lakers II in the Finals."

Playoffs start this Saturday. I haven't seen the ad campaign, but hopefully 40 Games, 40 Nights is back.

On the subject of Simmons his long talked about second book is finally coming out. In October? Why make us wait so long?

Intro by Malcom Gladwell.

Great Advice from the Reigning Champ

When asked to reminsice on the feelings of finally winning the NBA championship KG said,

"That shit...was magical."

Public Enemies Trailer #2

Kanye West Responds to South Park

"SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT'S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" IT'S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU'RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE'S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I'M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I'M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I'M SURE THERE'S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS... THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW IT'S ME!"
-KANYE WEST

Tragic

"I sat right there behind the bench and watched them warm up, and it was a dream," Bias said. "I thought then that could be me one day. It's a dream within a dream. My first dream was just to play in the NBA. To get drafted by the world champions is an extra one."

The 19th Hole

The new Legends Golf & Safari Resort in South Africa is supposed to be pretty cool, but the crazy 19th hole that offers a million dollar reward for a hole-in-one trumps all.

"The course's so-called "Xtreme 19th" hole is a par 3 -- a par 3 whose tee is atop a cliff on Hanglip Mountain, more than 1,400 feet above a green carved like the continent of Africa. You've got to take a helicopter to get to the tee box, and from there it's more than 630 yards to the pin. Once you tee off, it takes nearly 30 seconds for the ball to hit the ground."
