"If you’ve ever, in spite of yourself, had a craving for KFC fried chicken (never original, extra crispy only!) and you aspire to a more thoughtful, possibly healthful, or even just hip fried chicken, David Chang has been thinking of you. The chef and creator of the Momofuku empire has jumped into the fancy-fast-food game with a shop that specializes in fried-chicken sandwiches. He’s calling it Fuku, and it opened this week in his old Momofuku Noodle Bar space, on First Avenue. The menu has very few food items: the fried-chicken sandwich (it’s probably spicy), French fries (the inevitably unsatisfying steak-fry variety) and a Fuku, or Lucky, salad (pictures show some sort of grain topped with black sesame seeds and Mandarin orange segments that look like they came from a can). On the drinks side of the menu (a backlit letter board that would be at home in a bowling alley), there are lots of fun cocktails involving gin, vodka, whiskey, and tequila, each of which is more expensive than the sandwich. But that doesn’t matter. Chang has made some delicious fried chicken in his time, and for eight bucks and, perhaps, an hour-plus wait, it can be yours."
