XXL Magazine's Top 10 List of Hip-Hop Trends that must end by 2009 is a great compilation. If you have any interest in hip-hop or American culture I suggest you read the piece. It's as if blogger Paul Cantor read my mind.
"2) Hating on Auto-Tune- Critics need to stop bitching. It’s like getting mad at a guitar player for using a wha-wha pedal. For a rappers, the voice is the instrument of choice. They should be able to alter their voice however they want. What else do you expect them to do, get on the piano and hammer out a solo? It’s rapping. This is not music theory 101."
Completely wrong. It's as if a guitarist used distortion for his guitar, not a wah-wah pedal (correct spelling). A guitarist can use distortion as much as he wants in a song, but that doesn't make it good. In my mind, too much distortion ruins a song, and that's exactly how I feel about auto-tune. Auto-tune works for Britney Spears because it's used to touch up her voice. It rarely works for Kanye West because he uses it the entire song.
